Being a webmaster for a relatively short time I am still amazed by some of the stories out there. These are the things which make you take a second look and rethink your strategy. Often times you will want to try and do things differently so that you don’t come up to Webmasters forum and say “Boy do I have a great story to tell you guys.”

Why am I saying all of this? Because of Scott Hanselman. The favicon he was using managed to use up 27GB bandwidth in a month. Don’t believe me? Initially I thought it was a hoax and a neat Photoshop trick. But it seems he is in a pickle because of it. See the screenshot yourself.

The main thing to take away from his mistake is unless you have money to flush down the toilet never use a pimped out 70KB icon. And even worse, don’t try to justify it ”as I made it a wonderful high-quality “Vista” icon in an attempt to make things pleasant and everything for folks.”

  1. Exactly why I like the terabytes of bandwidth that shared webhosting gives. Otherwise with dedicated servers you only get a fraction of the bandwidth.
