Want to see a satellite being shot down by a missile? Look no further. US Government will fulfill your wishes later today. Over the past few weeks the US Government has been chalking up plans to down a satellite. The rogue spy satellite has turned into a disaster risk for the people on earth and orbiting junk in space. CNN is now reporting that the Navy has finalized plans to shoot down the satellite with a missile. This is similar to action taken by China last year to destroy one of their satellites. CNN reports … ”Sailors on the USS Lake Erie plan to fire a missile into space from a spot west of Hawaii around 10:30 p.m. ET Wednesday, Pentagon sources said. They hope to destroy the 5,000-pound spy satellite that malfunctioned just after launch in December 2006.”
Shooting down the satellite will cost the nation $60 million. Is it really worth it? Considering the fact that James Jeffrey, deputy national security adviser said ”there is only a remote possibility the satellite could fall to Earth, survive re-entry and spew toxic gas in a populated area”. Well, if we don’t shoot down the satellite now when will we get to see such space-blasting action ever again?
